I do stuff with several bands. I never know where a melody might take me or what kind it may be. Sometimes it can be a simple while other times it can be chaotic and complex.

I start building a song off a melody and not off a pre made beat and/or progression. I find that by doing it this way, it gives me more options and am not limited to the strict progression or beat.
As in many of my collabs, I often get just the melody or the vocal. Like the song "Shooting Star" sung by Tricia Dovidio, I worked off only the vocal re-harmonizing it and then building the background to fit the vocal. Often times the vocal will take me where the song needs to go.
Just because I love to play jazz doesn't always mean that it's the only thing That I play.
